Dr Andrew Collins is the new head of School of Optometry and Vision Sciences (SOVS) at the University of Auckland, following Professor Steven Dakin’s two four-year terms in the role.

Professor John Fraser, dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, said he was delighted with the appointment. “Andrew brings a wealth of experience to this senior leadership role. A registered optometrist and deputy chair of the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand, he has an in-depth understanding and strategic view of the future direction of optometry as a healthcare profession in New Zealand and Australia. He is committed to excellence in ongoing curriculum development and innovation, supported by world-leading clinical and vision science research, to continue to grow the school’s reputation as a leading centre for optometric education and research.”

Dr Collins was first appointed to the university as an optometry tutor in 1994 and has been a permanent member of SOVS since 2002. Since 2016, he’s been SOVS’ academic director, with overall responsibility for the BOptom programme and chair of the SOVS teaching and learning committee.

Prof Fraser also extended a warm thankyou to Prof Dakin for overseeing the transition from department to the faculty’s newest school and his “outstanding leadership” over the past eight years. Prof Dakin will continue to provide support to SOVS’ community outreach initiatives and its desire to promote greater equity in the sector.
