First-class Wellington weekend

March 4, 2020 Staff reporters

The Cornea and Contact Lens Society’s (CCLS) annual conference is returning to the capital with its popular one-day plus workshop format, Saturday 28 to Sunday 29 March 2020.

Held at the Harbourside Function Venue (former Mac's Function Centre), on Wellington’s waterfront, organisers promise a relaxed, fun and informative event, a world-class myopia workshop and an opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the country.

Sunday’s one-day programme offers a mix of keynote addresses, rapid-fire talks (15-30mins) and panel discussions. This year’s keynote is Dr Sue Ormonde, a cornea and anterior segment specialist with extensive experience in micro-incision refractive-cataract techniques, complex anterior segment surgery and corneal surgery. Dr Ormonde will cover four topics and could have you looking at the dark side of the moon judging by the intriguingly named first session, Pink Floyd with co-speaker Professor Charles McGhee. This is followed by Herpes, Keratoconus, with co-speaker Eleisha Dudson and Refractive Surgery.

The rapid-fire sessions cover a range of topics from dry eye to axial length biometry. Dr James McKelvie is talking on acanthamoeba keratitis, Richard Johnson will share insights from ten years of pterygium surgery and Dr Rasha Altaie will explore ocular allergies.

Guest speaker Kathryn Berkett will talk about the importance of self-care and, linking to Saturday’s myopia workshop, Drs Kate and Paul Gifford will cover burning topics in myopia-controlling lenses.

Finishing the day, winners of the CCLS 2020 competition for best anterior segment photos will be announced, followed by drinks and nibbles. The photo competition, with prizes, is open to all members across three categories: anterior segment disease, contact lens fitting and anterior surgery.

Myopia Profile Live

Following the success of the 2018 myopia roadshow, Drs Kate and Paul Gifford will join CCLS once more to offer an update on the latest myopia research and clinical pearls.

Joined by NZ Myopia Action Group’s Jagrut Lallu, Drs Kate and Paul Gifford will guide practitioners through four critical areas of successful myopia control: communicating the myopia management message, the visual environment and what to tell parents, myopia management clinical decision trees and fitting children with contact lenses. The afternoon session is dedicated to case discussions and attendees are encouraged to bring their own cases.

The Myopia Profile Live workshop, sponsored by CooperVision, is on Saturday 28 March 2020 from 8.30am to 4pm at the Harbourside Function Venue.

What’s on in Wellington?

Cuba Dupa is New Zealand’s largest free-access performance festival and is on the weekend of CCLS, Saturday 28 to Sunday 29 March. The popular street fest celebrates the vibrancy and creative spirit of Wellington, set amongst the Cuba Street precinct. Organisers promise more than 19 hours of entertainment, spanning genres and creative mediums. “The festival has become synonymous with colour, character, costume and a weekend at which Wellingtonians feel free to bring out their wild side,” organisers said.

What’s more, the annual Moore Wilson’s Street Feast will cater to most pallets with more than 100 food vendors and licensed areas in the Cuba Street precinct.
