Dominating one side of Designs for Vision’s (DFV’s) stand at RANZCO was the Proveo 8 ophthalmic microscope with its next-generation EnFocus intraoperative OCT solution from Leica.

The OCT addition was developed to support surgical workflow and provide greater insight for surgeons during surgery, said DFV’s Gareth Lindquist. “It’s particularly useful for corneal and vitreoretinal surgery. In the past, the big limitation for OCT intraoperatively has been usability, but this operates with a touchscreen, like an iPad.”

In addition to the usual top-down view of a normal operating microscope, the EnFocus OCT provides a cross-sectional view, allowing surgeons to see what lies underneath at the cellular level, he said. “So if anything is obstructing your view within the eye, you can scan through it.”

EnFocus intraoperative OCT gives the clinician additional real-time information for a deeper understanding of how subsurface tissue reacts to their surgical manoeuvres, said Leica. “You can enhance the microscope view with OCT imaging at any step during surgery with just a few taps… to achieve optimal patient outcomes by providing greater insight into hidden subsurface details, immediate confirmation on how tissue reacts and maximum freedom to view and review optimised OCT images during surgery.”
