Farewell to Dr Tracey Wong

September 30, 2025 The ESA team and NZ Optics

It is with deep sadness that we share the sudden passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Dr Tracey Wong, after a brief illness.

Tracey was a subspecialist in medical retina, visual electrophysiology and cataract surgery. She worked at Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau and Greenlane Clinical Centre before joining Eye Surgery Associates (ESA) in October 2021. At the time, Dr Hussain Patel noted, “We have all known Tracey for many years and felt that she would be a great fit for the practice. She is lovely to work with and shared our goals of providing excellent eyecare for our patients in a personalised, friendly environment.”

Quiet by nature but with a sharp sense of humour, Tracey was one of the kindest and most humble people you could meet. Calm even in stressful situations, she gave generously of her time and wisdom. As a mentor she inspired many colleagues and trainees, leaving a legacy of guidance and encouragement.

The NZ Optics team remembers not only her expertise but her warmth. In one presentation she joked about “how hard it is to follow a presentation which included bright purple and green-oozing eyeballs!” – a perfect example of her wit.

A dedicated RANZCO Optics Examiner Lead, she gave tirelessly in service to the College and its fellows.

Tracey leaves behind her beloved husband, Wannes, and children, Ruben and Lillian. She will be profoundly missed.
