Getting rid of stupid stuff

April 28, 2025 Staff reporters

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) Victoria is campaigning to eliminate inefficiencies, redirect resources to frontline care and boost worker morale in an initiative called Getting Rid of Stupid Stuff (GROSS).

AMA Victoria has launched a petition calling on the Victorian government to implement the initiative. At the time of writing it has 694 signatures. The association is also calling on healthcare professionals to submit their own examples of ‘stupid stuff’ to bolster its case. Australian Doctor cited examples including doctors being dragged away from patients to order office supplies and geriatricians having to undergo a working-with-children check.

The aims of the petition are to have the government publicly commit to implementing GROSS as a priority initiative; appoint Jenny Atta, secretary of the Department of Health, to lead the initiative and ensure it remains a serious organisational priority; and embed GROSS into the next round of health services’ Statements of Priorities to drive engagement and accountability across all departments and health services.
