Optomap slashes clinic visits

Optos’ optomap ultra-widefield retinal imaging system helps cut the duration of patients’ clinic visits by a third, according to a study by Stanford University researchers.

To increase photography capacity, often a bottleneck in clinics, technicians were trained to perform fundus photography and OCT, imaging equipment was moved to adjacent exam rooms and Optos widefield units were deployed, with staff schedules adjusted to reduce frequency and duration of handovers, reported researchers in Retina.

After four weeks the initiative reduced average visit times from 87 minutes to 58.5 minutes across two clinics in an academic ophthalmology department. Researchers also recorded additional patient benefits including increased satisfaction, less downtime and reduced movement around the clinic.
