After more than a decade in its previous premises, Nelson Eye Surgeons has opened the doors to its new, purpose-designed clinic shaped by patient feedback and clinical need.
For Nelson Eye Surgeons’ Drs Rob Jones and Antony Suter, the decision to move followed careful reflection on what their patients valued most. “We asked them directly,” said Dr Jones. “Two things came through very clearly: parking and a tranquil environment. We also needed room to expand.”
The new location delivers on all counts: ample, convenient parking – particularly important for older patients – while the setting itself is a marked departure from the previous premises. Surrounded by leafy greenery and landscaped grounds, the clinic offers a light-filled environment where the sound of tui and fantail replace traffic noise. “It’s a very different feel,” said Dr Suter. “Patients arrive more relaxed and that carries through their whole visit.”
The site’s proximity to the main hospital brings practical advantages and makes it easier for patients with multiple healthcare needs to coordinate appointments, he added. “Being located just 400m from the hospital eye department has proven valuable for clinicians and nursing staff working across both locations.”
From a clinical perspective, the move has allowed the team to refine how they work, said Dr Jones. “The new layout supports efficient patient flow alongside a more comfortable experience. There is also space for expansion and other ventures when additional clinicians join us."
The new clinic represents a natural evolution, aligning high-quality ophthalmic care with an environment designed around the needs of the people it serves, said Dr Jones. “We wanted something thoughtful rather than elaborate, a space that works well and feels good to be in. The excellent feedback so far has fully validated the venture.”
